Aired Tuesday (October 1), ‘Double Your House for Half the Money’ saw Nuthurst Lane couple Jason Bunce and Sarah Williams build an extension on their home and double the property’s value with the help of TV personality Sarah Beeny.

“We wouldn’t be able to afford to move into that sort of sized property if I had to buy it. So by extending our house, it gave us the equivalent for half the price,” said Jason.

It was Jason’s neighbour, David Fenn, who showed the couple a clipping from the County Times advertising for locals to apply for the show.

“I saw the article and was not sure at first, but I phoned them up and Red House TV productions called me back.

“They looked at 50 people in the UK to appear on the show and narrowed it down to 10 of us.”

Under the guidance of property developer Sarah Beeny and a film crew, everything was documented from the ground works and brick laying, to wall demolishing and roof fitting.

With a budget of £30,000, the two bedroom cottage on Horsham’s Nuthurst Road was completely transformed - increasing the width of the property from 3.8 meters to 4.5 meters and stretching the back up to 7 meters.

Now featuring weather tight windows, wooden flooring and a brand new kitchen - Jason just has some finishing touches to do, including wall plastering (which is his trade) and carpeting.

“By the time we finish everything the budget will be close to £40,000, and we will have increased the value from £275,000 to £420,000 and up - so we have definitely doubled the money on it,” the 35-year-old said.

Describing it as a ‘hard’ and ‘emotional’ experience, the father-of-one said the episode took seven months to film, during one of the most trying times of his life.

“It’s been an emotional journey with everything that was going on with the house, being really busy at work, and losing my uncle to cancer within just 13 weeks - it’s been a rollercoaster.

“The crew would turn up and the strangest times and in the evenings, but it’s all part of the experience. It’s been a chapter in my life I will never forget.”

On hand for the duration of the filming process, Jason said Sarah Beeny was ‘lovely’, ‘fun’ and ‘a good laugh’ to work with.

“Sarah was a great help. I wanted to move the staircase into the new extension, but because of cost implications, my girlfriend and Sarah were telling me not to do it. In the end I gave in.

“I’d like to thank everybody that’s helped on the project, including the ground workers, bricklayers, carpenters and roof tilers, and even my neighbour.”
