MUSICIANS from The West Sussex County Youth Orchestra have won a prestigious national award which will see them perform alongside one of the world’s leading orchestras.

The orchestra, which is West Sussex Music Service’s flagship ensemble, has been granted the Music for Youth National Partnership Award.

The award is sponsored by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and - as part of their prize - the Youth Orchestra will perform side-by-side with the LPO at one of their concerts at the Royal Festival Hall.

Members of the Youth Orchestra will also meet the LPO players and take part in one of their general rehearsals.

They were chosen following the finals of the Music for Youth festival, which was held at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall in July, where they impressed MFY Music mentors.

Conductor David Bennet said: “I am absolutely delighted and extremely proud of the young people in the orchestra.

“The opportunity to rehearse and perform with one of the world’s most renowned orchestras is just fantastic”

The orchestra is made up of 90 young musicians from West Sussex, aged between eight and 19-years-old.

Peter Evans, county council cabinet member for children - start of life, said: “This is an outstanding achievement for the young musicians, as well as the West Sussex Music Service.

“The orchestra has gone from strength to strength, and I think we have to pay tribute to the work of their conductor David Bennet and the staff at the Music Service.

“It is under their guidance and tutelage that this has been possible. Well done.”
