The new facility features a newly installed inspection pit, upgraded shutter doors, non-slip resin flooring, and an advanced brake-testing lane equipped with the latest Vamag Tecniche brake tester featuring load-simulation technology. This innovation removes the need for vehicles to arrive pre-loaded, allowing operators to secure and simulate load on site, making the testing process faster, safer, and more efficient.
The project brought together specialist partners including Everquip, Stirling Doors, Fumex and JonesBuild Contractors Ltd, for a series of complex installation and improvement works, ranging from exhaust extraction to flooring and equipment integration. The result is what industry partners describe as “one of the best ATF lanes seen in recent years.”
By investing in this facility, Stagecoach South East has eliminated the need to source testing capacity externally, resulting in reduced emissions as a result of not transporting vehicles to an external site. Now, with brake and smoke testing available on site, the depot is equipped to meet current and future commercial demand.
The Eastbourne ATF is the first in the district, giving DVSA a centrally located test lane in East Sussex. With existing test centres located on county borders and lead times often stretching to two or three months, the new facility is expected to relieve pressure on local operators and provide much-needed regional capacity. Early expressions of interest from transport firms confirm strong demand.
Grahame Patterson, Engineering Director at Stagecoach South East, said: “This investment isn’t just about modernising our facilities; it’s about creating long-term sustainability for the region. By providing testing capacity locally, we’re cutting unnecessary journeys, reducing emissions, and easing congestion on our roads. The new ATF strengthens our operational resilience while supporting cleaner, more efficient transport across East Sussex.”
Russell Engineering Manager at Stagecoach South East, added: Having a purpose-built test lane here in Eastbourne gives us a real opportunity to grow the business and create deeper partnerships within the local community. Operators no longer need to travel out of the area for routine testing, which saves time, lowers carbon impact, and keeps more work local. We’re proud to offer a facility that supports local firms, boosts the regional economy, and contributes to a more sustainable future.”
This investment reflects Stagecoach’s long-term commitment to strengthening its business while supporting the wider transport community. The new ATF creates opportunities for future retail testing, new commercial partnerships, and expanded service provision in the region.
