Huge international brand rumoured to be opening shop on Worthing high street
Unconfirmed rumours have been circulating on social media that a major international retailer will open a branch in Worthing
Work has been started to renovate the former Argos store on Montague Street, Worthing, where people commenting online believe a new Skechers store will open.
The popular footwear firm had previously advertised for a shop manager on recruitment website Glassdoor which read: “We are recruiting for a STORE MANAGER to join our new WORTHING store.” Applications have now closed.
In July, town planning consultants Lewis & Co applied to Worthing Borough Council on behalf of their (un-named) clients to install a new shop front on the property. The letter referenced installing two sets of double doors, so the space could be split into two shops in the future, as ‘finding a tenant that wanted all the retail space was difficult’. This was agreed.

In October, plans were also submitted to the council which could see another storey constructed on top of the property to house four flats – three two-bed and one one-bed.
The additional storey at 97-99 Montague Street would extend over most of the roof, with screening to be installed at the beach-facing side and access from ‘enhanced rear doors’, according to the plans.
A decision on that plan is pending and can be viewed at https://planning.adur-worthing.gov.uk/online-applications/ by searching AWDM/1279/25.
The space has been empty since Argos closed several years ago.
