The rock legend, whose most well-known songs include Red Right Hand and Into My Arms, has given the books to the Oxfam shop in Blatchington Road, Hove.
The books are believed to have been part of an art installation which the singer made with filmmakers Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, which was shown in Canada and Denmark.
The books on display during my visit ranged from very well-thumbed (a detective novel I saw had part of the cover seemingly torn off) to the nearly new.
Fiction, non-fiction and biographies were on display.
There was a wide range of authors including Elmore Leonard, Viv Albertine, Raymond Chandler, Barry Humphries, Friedrich Nietzsche, JG Ballard, John Steinback, PD James, Jim Thompson and Germaine Greer.
Staff at the shop were busy replenishing the shelves with books from large shopping bags on floor as people snapped up a tome from Cave's personal collection.
The age of people buying a Cave memento spanned from teenagers to veteran fans.
Many were scouring the pages for notes by the singer made on pages. One buyer was keen to tell a staff member that he’d found an annotation on a page!
Some books included items such as post cards, receipts, and even stickers from an old VHS video tape, used as bookmarks.
An Oxfam spokesperson confirmed that more than 2,000 books had been donated.
They added: "We are pricing them as we would any other donations.
"We're most excited about having lots of new customers and Nick Cave fans finding the shop for the first time via these books and having a great Oxfam experience."
