It goes beyond relaxing, and becomes a meditative experience. It was so good I almost fell asleep when I had a one-hour Japanese Head Spa at Halo & Silk in Shoreham – and owner Yasmin Harris said I wouldn’t have been alone if I had.
She said many of her clients doze off as she works her magic from her base at the ShoreRooms multi-room wellness and yoga studio in Brighton Road.
Opened at the end of last year, ShoreRooms is owned by Lindsay Grisbrook from The Scanning Room, a pregnancy scanning service.
ShoreRooms also has a reformer pilates studio, and is home to many other fitness and wellness practitioners, including massage therapists, reflexologists and aesthetic practitioners.
Yasmin started Halo & Silk a year ago after leaving a career as a medical secretary in the NHS. She had begun to feel unsatisfied at work, and an experience of having a Japanese head spa led her on the path to training to give the treatments herself. She initially started her business from home – also doing facials and other beauty treatments, such as lashes, brows and waxing – and moved into ShoreRooms after it opened at the beginning of this year.
A Japanese head spa is a deeply calming experience designed to rejuvenate your scalp. It focuses on pressure points, deep cleansing, and the soothing sound of water to promote hair health and mental clarity.
I wasn’t sure quite how it would work in practise, but Yasmin made me feel really at ease and talked me through the process.
First, she uses a scalp analysis machine to take a detailed view of your scalp and hair health. It magnifies the picture 200 times, so you can see in depth if your scalp is flaky, dry or has a build-up of products.
Using that information, Yasmin can tailor your treatment to what your scalp needs. She has a special treatment bed that has a sink attached to the head end which has a ‘halo’ that provides a gentle, all-round water flow.
The bed was surprisingly comfortable, and I found it was no issue lying there for an hour.
The Ritual experience (£60) starts with rosemary oil being applied and massaged into your scalp, followed by a cherry blossom scrub. Yasmin then double-cleansed my hair with a silk protein shampoo, followed by a deep conditioning treatment which is helped to soak in by a steam machine used over your head.
While it’s working, Yasmin gave me a really relaxing scalp, neck, and shoulder massage. This is then followed by a nourishing serum being applied to your hair.
All the while, soothing music is playing in the background, the room is nice and warm and the water sounds like gentle rain. It made for an experience unlike anything I’ve had before.
Even the sound of the shampoo being lathered up was incredibly calming – it’s an ASMR-lover’s dream!
But not only did I feel deeply relaxed after my head spa, but my scalp had never felt so clean and my hair was incredibly soft.
The treatment is designed to be a nervous system reset, and I can absolutely see why. It also helps to stimulate hair growth. It is recommended to repeat the treatment every 4-6 weeks to see the best results.
