Is Woolworths coming back to Sussex? The truth behind those rumours

A Twitter post has sparked much excitement this morning that beloved UK retailer Woolworths is back.

An account calling itself @UKWoolworths posted at 9am: “Here to save 2020! Woolworths is coming back to your high street, as a physical store!

“A couple of legal things to get sorted, but we’re full steam ahead at Woolworths HQ.

“We want to get this right, so we need your help. What do you want at your UK #YourWoolworths?”

The post quickly generated a lot of buzz and ‘Woolworths’ became the number one trending topic on Twitter.

Popular for its pick ‘n’ mix sweets, children’s toys, CDs and DVDs, Woolworths closed all 807 of its stores after falling into administration in 2008.

That included 16 across Sussex – including in Burgess Hill, St Leonards, Brighton, Eastbourne, Hastings, Littlehampton, Crawley, Shoreham, and Horsham.

The unverified Twitter account @UKWoolworths goes on to say throughout the week there will be announcements and chances to win gift cards.

However it is believed this is a hoax, after the account spelled its own business wrong and posted links to a faulty website.

And Woolworths owner Very.com told one journalist it did not know about the announcement.

It looks like that’s a no, then.

But the reaction to the hoax shows there’s a lot of love for Woolworths out there still.

In a recent survey, more than half (58 per cent) of Brits said they wished they could bring it back.

Other popular but vanished retailers that people say they missed included Toys R Us, BHS, Borders, Jane Norman, and Blockbusters.
