Town mayor Phil Woodall cut the ribbon outside the new store at Oldlands Farm in Steyning Way, North Bersted at 8am.

"I was very impressed with the layout of the shop," he said. "They are using all LED lighting which is cheaper and more economical.

"Hopefully it will boost the economy locally."

Mr Woodall said he has been listening to concerns from residents about the lack of a bus service in the area.

"The area manager said it is something they are going to look into," the Mayor or Bognor said.

The supermarket has relocated from its previous home across the road at the Peel Centre in Rowan Way, which closed on Wednesday (February 17).

The new store, which is next to the new Rolls-Royce facility south of the relief road and east of the A29, has 1,4010 square metres of sales area and includes 149 parking spaces.

The facilities include an in-store bakery, longer-style tills, a customer toilet, baby changing facilities, solar panels, electric vehicle 'rapid charging' spaces and 'ample parking for both cars and bicycles'.

The store opening times will be between 8am and 10pm, Monday to Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on Sunday.

The new supermarket forms part of the company’s ongoing £1.3bn expansion and regeneration plans across the UK, creating additional jobs for the local community whilst also 'retaining all the existing employees from the previous store'.

There are dedicated cleaning stations at entrances, hand sanitiser, disinfectant spray and wipes for customers to use on their trolleys and baskets, protective screens at checkouts, as well as visors and face coverings are available for colleagues to wear. In addition, customers are encouraged to pay by contactless payment where possible.

Lidl GB’s regional head of property, James Mitchell, said: “We would like to thank all those who have played a part in bringing this new Lidl store to Bognor Regis.

"It is great for us to be able to invest into the area and redevelop this key site whilst providing a new store that meets the needs of our customers.

"We are incredibly grateful to local residents for their patience and understanding during the construction phase and now can’t wait to start serving our multi-award winning products to the local community.”
