Review: A fresh chapter for Indian dining in West Sussex village

There is always a degree of uncertainty when a well-known restaurant changes hands or reinvents itself but Calcutta 16, in Barnham, makes a confident first impression.

Having recently replaced the long-established Passage to India, the restaurant – in The Square – has embraced the vibrant flavours of Indian street food, while still offering many of the classic curries that British diners know and love. The refreshed interior and menu signal a new direction.

Following the success of its Worthing and Shoreham-by-Sea restaurants, Calcutta 16 has expanded to Barnham, bringing its blend of authentic Indian street food and regional specialities to a new audience.

My meal at the new Indian street food restaurant began with crisp papadoms served alongside the customary quartet of mango chutney, mint sauce, mixed pickle and onion salad. The onion bhajis followed, arriving golden, crisp and packed with flavour without being overly oily.

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the chicken Chettinad. Originating from Tamil Nadu in southern India, the dish is known for its aromatic blend of toasted spices and coconut. Here it was fragrant, warming and full of depth, delivering a welcome alternative to the traditional curry house staples.

For those who prefer the classics, the king prawn tikka masala did not disappoint. Smooth, creamy and subtly spiced, it struck a pleasing balance between richness and freshness, with generously sized king prawns cooked to perfection.

The accompaniments were equally well executed, with light, fluffy rice and a soft, freshly baked naan that was ideal for mopping up the richly spiced sauces.

The bombay aloo, flavoured with cumin, turmeric and curry leaves, added another layer of warmth and spice to the meal.

Service throughout was attentive, friendly and efficient, with dishes arriving promptly and piping hot. Portions were generous, prices reasonable and the overall experience suggested that Calcutta 16 has settled quickly into its new identity.

The owner of the business, Md Tanvir Khan, says the restaurant takes guests on a ‘culinary journey’, where your ‘taste buds will discover the authentic flavours of India’.

He said all the food is freshly made with authentic flavours, adding: “It’s Indian food by Indians. You need to be from that part of India to bring the tastes.”
