A random act of kindness by an eight-year-old Steyning boy has caused a massive chain reaction at a tearoom in town.

Chester Fewtrell, a pupil at Steyning CE Primary School, was taken to Victoria’s Sponge, in High Street, as a reward for good behaviour.

The family then returned a while later, as Chester wanted to pay for the next person’s coffee, out of his own money, as his random act of kindness.

Mum Melanie Lacy-Fewtrell said she was ‘super proud’ of Chester.

She added: “Chester paid it forward for a cup of coffee – it then grew and grew. It’s up to 98 pay it forward coffees to date.”

Victoria Nicks, who opened the tearoom in June last year, was so overwhelmed by Chester’s act of kindness, she told as many people as she could.

This caused a chain reaction, with customers adding an extra hot drink on to their bill, so the next person or someone in need could get a hot drink.

Victoria said: “His act of kindness has reached so many and made people stop and think of others and really, that is what life is all about.”

Steyning Primary School posted on Facebook to say how wonderful it was to hear one of the pupils had been so thoughtful and compassionate to his local community.
