Worthing mum turns her love of cinnamon buns into a business – I've tried them, and they're fab!

I had a cinnamon bun for lunch, which was a real treat for an ordinary Wednesday.

In fact, I had a bit of several different cinnamon buns for lunch, and they were all amazing.

The departure from my usual salad was thanks to meeting Kotryna Kuzmaite this morning, the mum behind baking business Dozen Buns.

Kotryna is getting ready to celebrate one year of Dozen Buns this summer, and I met her to talk about how she got the business started as well as hear about what it takes to make cinnamon buns.

Mum-of-one Kotryna works full time in IT, as well as running her baking business out of her Worthing home in her spare time.

She explained how she got started: “Back in March last year, I was sitting at home scrolling social media on a cloudy and rainy day. Something about cinnamon buns came up, and I really fancied one, so I looked in the cupboards to check I had what I needed and I made a batch.

"I ended up eating the whole batch in one day, so the next day I made more. I got a bit obsessed with them, and started baking them regularly for family and friends. My partner Alex and my cousin kept saying I should sell them, but initially I brushed it off.

"Eventually, I decided to contact the council and get a food hygiene certificate and we started thinking of names. Dozen Buns came up and I knew it was perfect.

"I had no idea what the response would be if I started selling them, but at the beginning of August I did a Facebook post and I had so many people contacting me enquiring about ordering.

"Since then, I have sold at food markets and now I sell via my own website. I deliver them around Worthing, and I love making customers happy by producing a range of flavoured cinnamon buns.”

When I visited Kotryna, she was decorating a batch for me to try. She said that it takes around three hours to make a batch, which is 12 buns, which includes making, baking and decorating them.

I sampled the most popular flavour, the classic vanilla cream cheese, but I also tried chocolate and hazelnut, pistachio and Biscoff.

It’s hard to pick a favourite, because they were all so delicious – moist and with a generous amount of topping – but for me personally you can’t beat the classic cream cheese. I also loved the chocolate bun, while my children adored the Biscoff.

With father’s day coming up this weekend, Kotryna is getting ready to prepare several batches to be delivered as gifts. She also takes orders for any special events, such as end-of-term teacher gifts, birthdays, anniversaries or just for those who fancy a box of yummy sweet treats.
