For more than a century Manns of Cranleigh has laid the ground for department stores everywhere - offering linen, furniture, gifts and toys to a quaint village nestled in West Sussex since 1887.

To stick with the times, the company is undergoing a number of transformations (or phases as the industry professionals call it). After the success of its revamped furniture department last year, Manns has moved onto the flowing dresses, high heels and bright bling of womenswear.

Sitting down with consultant buyer, Jenny Hakim, and marketing co-ordinator, Hannah Child, I could not help but admire their enthusiasm about the unveiling in March that saw the movers and shakers of the county browsing the ‘new look’ with a glass of bubbly in hand.

“We made out a thousand invitations from our customer database, inviting them all to a grand shopping event,” explains Hannah.

“We offered a glass of Prosecco and some nibbles as people wandered around with Jenny and the team on hand offering their expertise.”

Jenny has been in the business of ‘buying’ for 35 years and is constantly on top of the current trend from the latest Pepe Jeans to the return of the retro half-hat.

“The idea was to increase the number of ranges and make it more broad spectrum for a larger age group and a bigger size of person,” says Jenny, bubbling with enthusiasm.

With well informed staff on hand, customers can expect one-on-one assistance when selecting the perfect outfit for a day in the sun or a night out on the town.

“It’s about lifting spirits and steering people in the right direction,” adds Jenny.

The six month transformation that spans over 1,400 square foot, includes four dressing rooms stationed by a plush sofa for people to unwind, and glamorous chandeliers overhead. Adorned in cool greys and a Winter Oak flooring by Pergo Floors, the transformation oozes sophistication.

Working alongside fellow buyer, Jo Griffiths, the team have designed a department that has received a positive response from customers in the last few months.

“It’s been a lot of planning and hard work, but now we span a wider demographic and people finally have a chance to see the entire range we have on offer. And our staff are on stand by to help them find the perfect outfit,” Hannah said.

If the new décor takes your fancy, enquire within - the chandeliers, flooring and wall colours were all provided by brands sold in Manns’ other splendid departments.
