Crawley was a village until the New Towns Act of 1946 designated it for major development - in parallel with Milton Keynes.

It has the most culturally and ethnically diverse population in West Sussex resulting from it rehousing large sections of London's overflow population post the second world war.

It houses the largest single runway - Gatwick Airport - in the UK.

It is also the economic powerhouse of Sussex being a key part of the 'Gatwick Diamond'.

Companies headquartered in Crawley include Doosan Babcock Energy, WesternGeco, Virgin Atlantic, William Reed Business Media, Dualit and the Office of the Paymaster-General. Danish company Novo Nordisk, which manufactures much of the world's insulin supply, has its UK headquarters at the Broadfield Business Park, and BDO Global has an office in Crawley. The UK headquarters of Nestlé is in the Manor Royal area of Crawley.
