The new flats and houses on the Bedfordwell Road site on Whitley Bridge would either be up for sale or rent, according to Eastbourne council, which is behind a multi-million pound redevelopment plan for the site.

The council bought the pumphouse site in 2017 and intends to deliver 96 new build homes, 13 refurbished homes plus additional commercial and community space in the pumphouse, which is a popular landmark and a listed building.

The project is set to cost £29 million and the council says a viability assessment undertaken shows the scheme is still financially capable of providing 55 affordable units – which is 57 per cent – of the development in addition to 41 homes which will be for sale on the open market.
