Former Ford haulage depot could be used for recycling scrap metal

HD White and Partners wants to move into The Factory on the Ford Aerodrome Industrial Estate on Burndell Road.

It has sought planning permission from West Sussex County Council to use the former haulage business premises for a metal recovery centre.

This would sort and separate cables as well as cut ferrous and non-ferrous metals and alloys.

Liz Lawrence, the company’s planning agent, says in a statement the location offers the perfect chance to move from the current premises, in Wick Street, in Littlehampton where 7,500 tons of steels and non-ferrous metals are recycled annually.

“While the business has successfully operated from that site for many years, it is far from ideal for a number of reasons.

“As a consequence, the company has been actively looking for suitable alternative premises for a considerable length of time.

“The application site fully meets all of their needs and is in an ideal location for the business,” she says.

It is situated within a large well-established general industrial estate and is 100m from the nearest housing. It also boasts good road access.

Added to this, the business will be open from 7am-6pm weekdays and 7am-1pm Saturdays compared to the 24-hour working of the previous business.

The 50 HGVs which used the site will be replaced by a maximum of 17 lorries a day and some 30 customers’ vehicles, she adds.
