Horsham firm creating 50 jobs

IN CONTRAST to government figures which chart a continuing rise in unemployment, one Horsham company says they are having trouble finding young enthusiastic staff for their new positions.

Global4Communications, a provider of telecommunication solutions for large businesses including Sky, and their residential division Home Telecom Ltd, is eager to fill 50 new jobs they are creating in Horsham town centre.

Having obtained more than 10,000 new customers in just eight months, the company is expecting 20,000 more over the next year.

In an effort to encourage eager graduates to apply for roles in their tele-sales, customer support, accounts and billing departments, the company relocated its head office to Queens Road in Horsham town centre last November.

Nigel Barnett, managing director of Global4Communications, said: “There are lots of young people around here and we thought we could take them on. I would rather take on youngsters and train them well.”

Having received applicants from recruitment agencies, Mr Barnett is keen for people will an interest in telecommunications to apply for the positions. “They don’t do the screening they ought to”, said Mr Barnett. “We want someone to read the article and decide ‘this is right for me’.”

Home Telecom Ltd, which was established in May last year, works with more than 42 per cent of high street estate agents.

The company provides home telephone and broadband for the length of a tenancy, ensuring that residents are not forced into expensive two year contracts when they might only need one for six months.

“We can offer the tenant something else which is flexible for the term of their contract”, said Mr Barnett. “We go in and show people how to save money on their telecoms.”

More than 10 per cent of Home Telecom’s 63 staff are recent graduates, and the company hopes that the new office and its central location will encourage more interest from people looking for work.

Figures released by the Office of National Statistics have revealed that unemployment across the country rose by 118,000 between September and November compared to the previous quarter.

These statistics also show that 1,360 people were claiming Job Seekers Allowance in Horsham alone during this time.
