Newhaven kebab shop long-listed for prestigious British Kebab Award
A kebab shop in Newhaven which has been supporting the community during the pandemic has been long-listed for the British Kebab Awards.
Bursa Kebab in High Street, Newhaven is in the running for an award in the Customer Satisfaction category.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London.
Mark Bursa from Bursa Kebab said he was ‘very proud’ of the team for achieving such high standards, and described being recognised for their efforts as ‘very fulfilling’.
He said: “As a small business owner we believe eateries are a key part of the local community.
“Not only does Bursa Kebab serve fantastic food, we also offer a vital source of local jobs, bring diversity to our high streets and make a significant contribution to the UK economy, particularly significant at the end of a challenging year.
“We have had great success over the years and our support is growing immensely stronger by the year.”
The team has been busy supporting the community throughout the pandemic.
It donated hot and cold food to Seahaven Community Food to help those in need, worked alongside Lewes District Council to help promoting shopping local to save the high street, and provided food to Newhaven lifeboat volunteers and many key workers as a way of thanking them for their hard work.
The team also sent out meals to all the frontline nurses at the Newhaven Rehabilitation Centre and took part in Marcus Rashford’s #nokidgoeshungry campaign, feeding up to 100 children during that week completely free of charge.
“We are immensely proud to be able to give back to our community and hope to continue this for as long as we possibly can,” Mr Bursa said.
“We are urging all our customers and the people of Newhaven and East Sussex to vote for Bursa Kebab on the British Kebab Awards website.
“With further support and votes we believe we could be in a better position to win.
“We wish all semi-finalists the best of luck!”
The team was congratulated by Maria Caulfield, the MP for Lewes.
She said: “I am delighted that Newhaven’s Bursa Kebab has been long-listed for the prestigious British Kebab Awards, which highlights their contribution to the kebab industry in the UK.
“I wish the team many congratulations for their success and wish them good luck in the semi-finals and look forward to visiting them in the near future.”
Gongs will be presented for a total of 17 categories at the ninth annual British Kebab Awards, following a competitive nomination process.
The Awards have become a fixture in the annual food awards calendar, and celebrate the growing contribution of the kebab industry to the UK.
The British kebab industry contributes over £2.8 billion annually to the British economy, supporting around 200,000 jobs across takeaways, restaurants, suppliers and the food industry in the UK.
