Nyetimber Post Office marks a national milestone

Customers of Nyetimber Post Office are benefiting from the improvements which made it the 6,000th branch nationally to be modernised.

The transformed business on Pagham Road re-opened last week after taking part in the multi-million pound programme.

Post Office chairman Tim Parker and Paula Vennells, the company’s chief executive, joined Nyetimber postmaster Than Thevarajah for the occasion.

Mr Parker said: “The modernisation programme is all about making sure Post Offices throughout the country are modern places for people to visit, have opening hours that suit customers, and are on a secure financial footing for the future.

“I am delighted we have reached the milestone of 6,000 modernised branches. It has been great to meet Than and to hear about his plans for his business and how he sees the modernisation acting as a springboard for the future success of his business.”

The store closed last month for the modernisation. Its re-opening has seen customers enjoy longer opening hours for the Post Office with 66 hours a week against 41 hours previously.

Velauthapillai Thevarajah and his family have run Nyetimber Stores for 15 years. They were quick to take advantage of the chance of investment in their branch. Son Than is running the store and has been the driving force behind the changes.

He said customers were already enjoying the extra hours. “The additional investment has been a terrific opportunity for us to modernise the branch and we’ve been working with the Post Office retail team to make the most of the extra retail space now we’re working open plan,” he said.

Ms Vennells said: “Postmasters like Than are what makes the Post Office such a special business. It’s been great to talk to him and to get a sense of the vital role the Post Office plays in the Nyetimber community.”

The change also saw the store begin to trade as a Spar.
