The protest opposing the proposal by Post Office Ltd continues to gather support.

It will be handed over to the town’s MP, Nick Gibb, outside the High Street premises this Saturday.

Post Office Ltd wants to franchise the service to a commercial operator which will accommodate it. Expressions of interest from potential operators were needed before yesterday.

Cllr Paul Wells started the petition. He said: “I’m pleased with the number of people who signed it to date since the plan was announced a month ago. There are still a lot of paper copies in various places and I expect the total to climb to nearer 4,000 or even past it.

“A lot of people can’t believe Post Office Ltd want to shut a post office which always seems to be so busy. Some people think it’s disgraceful to close such a vital amenity in the town.”

The petition describes the franchising as being against the benefit of people in the town.

One of those who signed the online petition, Philippa Owen, said: “I use the post office. Many vulnerable people rely on its services. It’s an important service in the town centre.”
