The Business Coach with Laura Murphy: They’re not job ready

Question: “I run a hospitality company with a high staff turnover principally because people just aren’t up to the job. How can I reduce turnover?” Mac

Answer: “Hospitality can have a high churn rate but those who keep staff do so because they’re good employers, or they employ good staff, or both.

Look hard at your business, its culture, terms and conditions and your expectations. Would staff be proud to say they work for your company and/or you?

If they don’t recommend anyone when you’re recruiting then the answer is no. Find out why not and change it.

Next consider how you recruit. It’s costly in terms of time, staff training and reputation so getting it right is crucial. There’s various employer support schemes one of which is JobCentrePlus’ Recruitment Model.

With any business wanting to recruit 5+ employees, JCP will find out what you need, select people and provide them with tailored training. You decide on the work experience they undertake with you before choosing who, if any, to employ.

By tracking them throughout you’ll know their skills and capabilities. It’s quick, free and, depending on their age, you can also get an offset against salary costs.

If you need less than 5 people get together with other hospitality employers to commission the scheme. You’ll all benefit by getting a bigger pool of trained potential employees to choose from.

So, do your company audit, then when you’re ready speak to the Employer Management Team at the JobCentre or another employer support organisation. Happy recruiting!”
