The Lantern Parade and Mayor’s Proclamation took place on Saturday (October 31), combining a historic Chichester tradition with family-friendly Halloween fun.
To celebrate 800 years of civil governance, the parade drew inspiration from a centuries-old custom of the Mayor walking the streets behind a globular lantern, now known as the Municipal Moon.
It was led by Petworth Town Band, who made their way from the Council House on North Street to the Market Cross. There, the Mayor delivered a proclamation to mark the anniversary, followed by a blessing for the city by the Reverend Canon David Nason.
The parade continued along East Street and into Priory Park, culminating in a family-friendly Halloween disco at the Guildhall. Children could also enjoy lantern-making workshops ahead of the event, alongside free face-painting during it.
Here are some pictures from the historic occasion.
