Hedlen Johnson, Clerk to Heathfield and Waldron Parish Council, says the land east of Scotsford Road in Broad Oak, previously used as a recreation field for Broad Oak Primary School, has now been secured for the community.
She continued: "We listened to residents at the public meeting we held regarding the site and will be applying for planning permission to change the use to a recreation and nature field for community use.
"We have already undertaken a preliminary ecological survey of the site and are now arranging for a survey for Great Crested Newts to ensure that, if there are any protected species, they are properly catered for."
She went on to explain it will be a while before they can open the site to residents as there is currently a grazing licence on the land between East Sussex County Council and a local farmer and the lease will not begin until this expires. They will then need to ensure the site is safe for people to use by undertaking a tree survey, improving the entrances.
Helen concluded: "We see this as an investment for local residents, especially those in Broad Oak, and we are pleased to share this news with you."
The move has won praise from many local people. Long term supporter of the move to secure the site for local use, Ian Ledger said: "Fantastic news. As a personal note, after so many years in 'fight mode' it's a relief to have residents' views heard and I cannot express enough how much I appreciate the time and effort the parish has given to make this happen. Thank you!"
On social media, Jane SA said: "Great news. Thank you to the parish council but also to Ian Ledger who has devoted a lot of time and effort to bring this about."
