The service was led by Fr Edward Pritchett, Rector of St Wilfrid’s Church, who guided those gathered through prayers, reflections, and moments of contemplation. His leadership provided a respectful and unifying tone for the ceremony.
The event was honoured by the presence of Lady Emma Barnard, the Lord Lieutenant of Sussex, who joined a wide cross‑section of local civic, faith, and community representatives. Those present included, Cllr Duncan Pascoe - Town Mayor, Mike Kennedy - Chairman of Mid Sussex District Council, Sir Richard Kleinwort, the Imam of Mid Sussex Mosque, along with Town and District Councillors and many local residents.
Schools also played an important part in the commemoration, with pupils from Oathall School, Warden Park School, and Great Walstead School participating in the ceremony. Great Walstead School contributed a poignant musical moment with their performance of Shalom.
As part of the act of remembrance, representatives and attendees were invited to lay stones and flowers. This symbolic gesture – reflecting both Jewish tradition and universal remembrance – created a moving tribute to those who perished in the Holocaust and all victims of persecution. The act created a quiet but powerful moment of collective reflection.
Schools played a meaningful role, with representatives from Oathall School, Warden Park School, and Great Walstead School. A particularly poignant moment came when pupils from Great Walstead School performed the song Shalom, offering a message of peace, friendship, and hope.
Following the ceremony, attendees were invited to the second part of the memorial event. Susanna Kester from Generation 2 Generation delivered a compelling presentation about her father and uncle, sharing their family’s Holocaust experiences and the legacy carried through generations. Her presentation offered a profound reminder of the importance of testimony and the need to ensure these stories continue to be told.
The Holocaust Memorial Service brought together people of all ages, backgrounds, and faiths. Through music, testimony, prayer, and symbolic acts, the community reaffirmed its commitment to commemorating those who suffered, standing against prejudice, and fostering peace and understanding.
