Local man transforms health and mindset through Slimming World support

A local Slimming World member has shared his inspiring journey of weight loss, improved health and renewed confidence - showing how persistence, mindset and community support can lead to lasting lifestyle change.
Mark joined Slimming World after encouragement from existing members, having previously struggled to lose weight on his own. At the time, he felt he had nothing to lose by giving it a try.
One of the biggest factors in his success has been the flexibility of Slimming World’s Food Optimising approach. Mark explains that being able to enjoy satisfying, everyday foods while understanding how different choices affect his progress has helped him stay consistent long term. He feels confident staying on plan even when eating away from home, something he often has to do due to working away. His husband also eats the same meals most of the time, helping to make the changes sustainable for the whole household.
Mark describes weight loss as a journey with many paths, hills and valleys. One of his biggest challenges has been learning how to persist during weeks of weight gain - understanding what led to certain choices and, crucially, how to change his mindset and move forward rather than give up.
The physical changes have been significant. Mark is now wearing clothes he had not taken out of his wardrobe for more than five years. He feels fitter, more able and regularly uses his exercise bike to tone up and keep active.
The health benefits have been life-changing. Mark has successfully lowered his cholesterol levels without medication, having refused statins and committed to improving his health through weight loss instead. His arthritis is now far better managed and almost non-existent. At his heaviest, weighing close to 22-23 stone, Mark was at risk of becoming pre-diabetic, something he believes he managed to prevent by making changes in time.
A key part of Mark’s journey has been attending group consistently, even during weeks when the scales showed a gain. He credits the ethos of group support as vital to his success - offering encouragement, shared understanding during difficult weeks and genuine celebration of others’ achievements.
Mark attends the 5.30pm Slimming World group in Yapton, run by Kirsty Cheynhe, which he says quickly challenged any preconceived ideas he had about weight loss clubs. He describes the group as social, uplifting and positive, with a supportive culture that keeps members motivated and committed.
His story highlights the long-term impact of consistency, mindset and community support, and the powerful role group environments can play in helping people achieve lasting health improvements.
