Seven in ten over-60s in West Sussex claim free bus pass as majority say it boosts their independence

New research from Stagecoach, has revealed that free bus travel is helping older residents across West Sussex stay independent, active and connected.
According to a survey of over-60s, 70% of people in West Sussex have already claimed their free concessionary bus pass, highlighting strong uptake across the county.
The findings also show that bus travel is playing a key role in maintaining independence, with six in ten over-60s saying taking the bus gives them more freedom to get around, visit friends and carry out everyday activities.
In addition, 60% say their bus pass helps them visit family and friends, while the same number say it allows them to avoid the hassle and cost of parking.
The research underlines how concessionary travel is supporting older people not just with practical journeys, but with maintaining social connections and quality of life.
Marc Reddy, Managing Director of Stagecoach South, said: “For many older people in West Sussex, the bus is a vital part of daily life. It’s not just about transport, it’s about independence, staying connected and having the confidence to get out and about.
It’s fantastic to see such strong uptake of concessionary bus passes locally, and that so many people are using them to visit loved ones and avoid the stress of driving and parking.”
The survey also found that many over-60s would choose the bus over other forms of transport when available, reinforcing the importance of reliable local services.
Stagecoach South is encouraging anyone eligible who has not yet applied for their free bus pass to take advantage of the scheme.
