Summer fair raises much needed funds for Mayfield schools - pictures

Mayfield Girls and Mayfield Primary schools joined forces to stage a summer fair in the grounds of The Old Palace on Sunday.

The aim was to raise much-needed funds for school projects and both the summer weather and generosity of crowds who attended assured they did just that.

Mayfield Girls' students helped the primary youngsters lay on a wealth of fun stalls, games and events including Hook-a-Duck and a coconut shy - both trickier than they looked. The barbecue team, all professional caterers from the school, were kept busy with demands for burgers and sausages. Meanwhile a troupe of young dancers performed on the college lawns while Maypole dancers weaved intricate patterns with coloured ribbons. There was a human fruit machine, demonstrations of weaving and spinning while charities like the local MAYFACS team of Lucy Jervis, Clare Vosloo and Freye Huxtable recruited helpers and described their work to visitors.

Demonstrating the generosity of Mayfield families, a giant raffle displayed prizes such as magnums of wine, yoga classes, cinema tickets, hair and beauty vouchers, multiple afternoon teas for two and homemade food and oversized drink hampers. These were prepared by pupils at the primary school. Each class was given a colour theme and families decorated their hampers and donated goodies in their chosen shade. Rafflemasters were mothers Sue Stone and Natalia Paville.

The total raised will be counted by the end of the week but judging from the enthusiasm of organisers, it looks set to be far higher than the original target.
