Sussex Freemasons honour the fallen Across West Sussex on Remembrance Sunday

Freemasons from across West Sussex joined their local communities on Remembrance Sunday to pay their respects to the men and women who have given their lives in service to their country. Members from lodges throughout the West Group took part in parades, wreath-laying ceremonies, and Services of Remembrance held in towns and villages including Bognor, Chichester, Ferring, Littlehampton, Midhurst, Pulborough, and Worthing.

In Bognor Regis, more than thirty Freemasons gathered to take part in the town’s commemorations, marching proudly in the parade and laying a wreath at the memorial. Among those attending were members of the local Ladies’ Lodge, Duegarde Lodge No. 34, reflecting the inclusive and family spirit that characterises Freemasonry across Sussex.

Across the county, lodges were represented at a number of services, with many Masons attending in Masonic collars or uniform. Wreaths bearing the square and compasses — the symbol of Freemasonry — were laid in honour of the fallen, representing the fraternity’s deep respect and remembrance for all who have served.

For many Sussex Freemasons, the day holds an especially personal meaning. A significant number of members are veterans of the armed forces, having served in conflicts from the Falklands and Northern Ireland to Iraq and Afghanistan. Others are currently serving members of the Royal Navy, Army, and Royal Air Force — continuing a proud tradition of service that runs through Freemasonry’s history.

Toby Pratt, a veteran of the Royal Navy, reflected: “Remembrance Sunday is not just about looking back — it’s about ensuring we never forget the values of duty, sacrifice, and service. Those values are at the very heart of Freemasonry, and they are shared by so many of our brothers who have worn the uniform.”

From the solemn silence that fell at 11am to the playing of the Last Post, the ceremonies across West Sussex were moments of quiet reflection and collective pride. Freemasons stood shoulder to shoulder with veterans, serving personnel, civic leaders, and members of the public — united in remembrance.

John Spence, Chairman of the West Group Sussex Freemasons said: “It was a privilege for Freemasons to stand alongside our communities once again on this most important of days. Many of our members have served, or continue to serve, in the armed forces, and Remembrance Sunday provides a chance for us all to come together in gratitude and reflection. Freemasonry has always stood for service to others — and remembering those who gave their lives for peace and freedom is a vital part of that.”

The presence of Freemasons at Remembrance events across the county highlights the fraternity’s enduring commitment to community, charity, and country. As the wreaths were laid and prayers said, the moment served as a poignant reminder that remembrance is not just an act of tradition — it is an act of unity.

The West Group Sussex Freemasons continues to support veterans’ charities and local initiatives throughout the year, reinforcing the close connection between Masonic principles and service to others.
