Sussex Liberal Democrat MPs John Milne, Alison Bennett and James MacCleary hosted an 'A Taste of Sussex' event in Parliament this week, celebrating the exceptional food and drink producers across the region.
The event showcased seven outstanding local businesses, including Mamoosh Bakery, Garden to Jar, Bookham Harrison Farms (Sussex Charmer), J Cocoa, Brolly Brewing, Kukuya Kitchen, and Coolhurst Vineyards.
The produce on display ranged from artisan pitta breads and craft beer to sparkling wine, chocolate, chutneys, and cheese, underlining the strength and creativity of Sussex’s food and drink sector.
Speaking after the event, Liberal Democrat MP for Horsham John Milne said:
“We were proud to welcome these brilliant businesses to Parliament to showcase the exceptional produce our region has to offer. I want to say a huge thank you to all of them for taking part and shining a light on the vital role they play in our rural and local economy.
“Many local businesses like these are being squeezed from every angle at the moment and need urgent protection from the government. That's why we’re calling for support through a complete overhaul of the business rates system and an emergency VAT cut for hospitality to protect jobs and high streets.”
Lib Dem MP for Mid Sussex, Alison Bennett, said: “Sussex has a thriving food and drink industry, and it was brilliant to see local talent on display in Parliament. Mid Sussex was well represented by Hassocks-based chocolatier, J Cocoa, who brought their delicious produce up to Westminster for the event.
“We need to foster innovation and creativity in our local area now more than ever. Small businesses are dealing with significant pressures as a result of reckless Treasury decisions and the government’s lack of clear thinking when it comes to our high streets. My Lib Dem colleagues and I will continue to fight the corner of small business owners, to make sure they are given the tools they need to thrive.”
Lib Dem MP for Lewes, James MacCleary, said: “Our small businesses are the backbone of this country and the beating heart of our communities. That’s why it was brilliant to see Sussex’s fantastic local producers celebrated in Parliament - and especially great to see Mamoosh from Newhaven showcasing their brilliant food. A big shout-out to John Milne and his team for organising such a fantastic event and giving local businesses the platform they deserve.”
