Crawley pupils join race to beat cancer at special fundraising events

Crawley pupils at two school held a Race for Life event raising more than £6,500 between them.

St Francis of Assisi Catholic Primary School in Southgate and The Oaks Primary School in Tilgate ran the event either walking or ran to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

It happened just a few days after the Crawley adult Race for Life held in Tilgate Park.

Organiser at St Francis of Assisi school Jo Whittock said: “Many of the younger children were determined to run for the duration of the race stating that they did not want to give up, it was evident that they were motivating and supporting each other.

“It was fantastic to see so many adults and children working together to help beat cancer.

“Many families were there to support and cheer on their children during the event.”

She school ahs so far raised £2,159 for the charity.

Nicola McLaughlin from The Oaks said: “Many people’s lives have or will be affected by cancer at some point and we feel if we, as a school can raise some money for Cancer Research, we can help beat cancer sooner.

“Each child was encouraged to run/walk/skip around the course, the distance each year group ran depended on their year group, starting with Nursery and Reception children completing one lap to Year 6 children completing six laps.

“All the children got into the spirit wearing a pink item in recognition of the Race for Life colour and participating in a musical warm up before the event.

“Our target was £2000, but we totally smashed this by raising a whopping £4695.76 to date.

“We are absolutely delighted by the support we received from parents and children alike and are very proud of each and every one of our pupils at The Oaks Primary School.”
