DEBATE: What do you think of teacher strikes in the Horsham district?

Kingslea Primary School in Horsham and Shelley Primary School in Broadbridge Heath will be closed completely on the day.

The Forest School in Horsham and Billingshurst Primary School are set to be partially closed as a result of the strike action from members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT).

The strikes have been slammed as ‘futile, counter-productive, empty-gesture politics’ by Deborah Lawson, the general secretary of Voice, the ‘union for education professionals’.

She said: “Teachers’ strikes are futile, counter-productive and empty-gesture politics.

“There is little, if any, public support for strike action by teachers.

“For the sake of the profession, schools, students and education, the way forward has to be through reasoned negotiation and evidence-based campaigning – the force of argument, rather than the argument of force that Michael Gove (education secretary) and his supporters are waiting to exploit.”

The debate has attracted a number of comments on the County Times website.

‘Bettyboop100’ said ‘what’s wrong with performance related pay’, and ‘fireyfish27’ said ‘the system needs to be changed or we will have another generation of failed kids’.

However, ‘babby’ said: “It sickens me that certain ill-informed readers feel it is ok to ‘teacher bash’.”
