Willmott Dixon, which is over mid-way through the £13.5 million works at Millais School, held the event amongst pupils, the chair of governors and teaching staff.

The second phase of work includes demolishing the existing entrance and teaching block to make way for a new two-storey entrance block and extension to existing science laboratories which will be complete towards the end of next year.

Preliminary works for the £4.5 million construction phase will be complete in the New Year.

Willmott Dixon’s construction manager for the project, Matt Dubber, was present at the event and said: “We are pleased to start the second major phase of works at the school. We have developed great relationships with the school and are delighted to be pressing ahead with the next phase of this significant project in the local community.”

Next year, Willmott Dixon’s site team will be working directly with the school to offer hands-on construction experience and provide insight to pupils.

Matt added: “As well as progressing well with the build of the facilities, we’re looking forward to working with the school to give pupils careers advice and an insight into working in the construction industry – there’s no better way than to experience this first-hand with the buildings surrounding them.”

Leon Nettley, headteacher at Millais School, said: “The demolition of the existing entrance marks the end of an era for the staff and pupils and the start of a new one.

“We have already taken possession of the first construction block and we moved in over the October half-term. We’re excited to see the changes taking place around us and eagerly await the completion next year.”
