Felpham Community College pupil Carol achieved gold in this year’s British Biology Olympiad, run by the Royal Society of Biology.

Her success took her through to the next level in March.

Sixteen students from there will be invited to the University of Warwick next month to take practical assessments and sit an additional written paper.

Four of those students will be selected to represent the UK at the International Biology Olympiad in Vietnam in July.

Year 13 student Carol’s success was just one part of a double triumph in the British event for the community college.

Her fellow sixth former, Flynn Jeffery, achieved a silver award.

This means they both came in the top 15 per cent of the 7,000 entrants.

Carol said: “We both sat the Chemistry Challenge in 2015 and decided to do the Biology Olympiad this year as it is another way to test ourselves and see different types and styles of questions and problem solving.”

Flynn said: “We both revised for the exam and were really chuffed to have done so well.”
