The Bewbush Academy believe that all children should experience the joys of the seaside and are asking for donations to help take their Year 5 classes to the South Coast.

Lockdown has caused many families to feel the pinch and has affected their students’ lives in many ways.

School trips have been a thing of the past during the pandemic, as well as trips out for families who have been unable to take their children away or simply can’t afford to do it.

This year’s Year 5 classes are learning about rivers, sustainability, and recycling. While studying the topic, the staff at The Bewbush Academy realised that some of their students didn’t know about the seas because they hadn’t been there.

The teachers would really love their children to see the sea as part of their Rivers & Sustainability topic but for this to happen, it will require two coaches.

Once on-site, they would need a professional to teach the children about where they are and how it relates to their topic, but this comes with a cost.

To enable this trip to happen, their Year 5 classes have thought long and hard about how they could raise money, which they are having a lot of success with already!

Infinity Foods in Brighton has donated £500 and Crawley Town Football Club have donated tickets to a match for this season, which the school will be raffling off. One teacher in the year group has even been selling eggs from her hens to raise money.

Year 5 Teacher Miss Chorin said: “Being so close to the sea, it is devastating to realise that for some children, it is still an unknown world to them.

“We first realised it while studying a text about shells. Some children, who are competent readers, were not able to understand the text because they had never seen shells before.

“This trip would benefit the children on so many different levels.”

Year 5 student Sky said: “I would like to go there so I can see the sea. In my head it is wavy and I hope I can see some animals in the sea.”

Year 5 student Olly said: “Because we get to get some fresh air and run around and since we can’t go to the seaside a lot because of Covid it would be nice to go to discover more about our topic.”
