School council members from Pevensey and Westham CE Primary School held the Q&A with councillor Ray Cade (Wealden District Council) and Battle and Bexhill MP Huw Merriman. This was part of their ongoing work to raise awareness of local issues. The students asked questions about politics including: traffic issues in the local area, voting rights, energy prices and what the politicians found the most challenging aspect of their job.

Mr Merriman said: “It was a great pleasure to visit Pevensey and Westham school during Parliament week to meet the new school council. They were excellent representatives for their classes and had some really interesting questions for me. The pupils were concerned about road safety and illegal parking outside their school. Both I and Cllr Ray Cade have committed to helping them with this issue. They also asked me what I enjoyed most about the job of MP, this was an easy one to answer, it’s being able to help people with some of the most difficult and challenging problems they may face in their lives.”

Cllr Cade said: “It was an enjoyable and interesting experience, and I was impressed how articulate the children were with their questions. Clearly, they were presenting questions acquired from their classmates along with their own ideas, and this led to some challenging subjects. It was encouraging to see how understanding, aware and interested the children were."
