St Andrew’s CofE High School for Boys, in Sackville Road, underwent a two-day inspection after previously being told it ‘required improvement’.

Headteacher Steve Mercer and chair of governors Clive Purser welcomed inspector David Smith and his team to the school on April 29/30.

Mr Smith’s findings were published on June 4 – and St Andrew’s was able to celebrate a ‘good’ rating.

The report stated: “School leaders have effectively tackled the weaknesses identified by the school’s previous inspection.

Students make good progress from their different starting points. Their attainment is rising rapidly as a result of effective action taken by leaders to improve the quality of teaching, which is now good.

“School leaders are relentless in their ambition to raise achievement and improve the quality of teaching even further.”

Mr Smith highlighted three points which St Andrew’s would need to address before it could be given the top ‘outstanding’ rating.

Teachers were advised to provide interesting and challenging work for the students and also to check students were amending and improving their work following staff feedback.

Subject leaders were also called on to hold their teams to account for the quality of teaching and learning they provided.

Those points aside, the report put a smile on the faces of everyone at St Andrew’s.

Mr Mercer said the school’s success had been a real team effort with the leaders, governing body, teaching staff, administrative staff, students, parents and wider community working together.

He added: “I would like to thank the St Andrew’s family for all their hard work which has made us the successful school it is.”
