And just before the end of term, Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA) teacher Chris Mellett had to say goodbye to his beard after ten years – as they raised £3,200.

On Friday, students Leanne Coltherd, Kaitlin Emery and Daniella Birchley – who led the fundraising for East Sussex charity Children with Cancer Fund – each got to clip a chunk of their teacher's beard off in assembly.

PACA teacher Mike Jones in a blond wig and apron, stepped in to shave off the rest – to great cheers from the students and fellow staff members.

Mr Mellett said: “We’re are very proud of the considerable amount of fundraising and volunteering for local causes that PACA students do, and to raise over £3,000 for Children with Cancer Fund is great.”

And asked how it felt to be clean shaven after so long, he said: "Very odd…..and very cold!”.
