West Sussex special school seeks governors to help build on its success

A West Sussex school for boys with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties is keen to recruit two new governors following a positive Ofsted inspection in January 2026.

Cornfield School, in Littlehampton, is maintained by West Sussex County Council. It aims to provide a supportive learning environment for boys aged eight to 16, giving every student equal access to a broad and balanced curriculum.

Catherine Davies is the new chair of governors and Helen Gilbert is vice chair, and they are desperate for more people to join the board, particularly those with special expertise.

Catherine said: “We are a committed group of governors and have a passion and deep desire to strengthen our impact. We are looking for two individuals to join the board of governors to continue to build on our success as a school.

“You would be joining us at an exciting time, with the school recently having a positive Ofsted inspection in January 2026, which recognised the key role that governance plays but we have some further work to do.”

The inspector felt the board did not have the detailed knowledge needed to be effective in some areas, though it was noted the current governors were committed to the work of the school and broadly fulfilled their statutory duties.

Catherine said: “We would particularly welcome those who have a background in education, SEND, health and safety, finance, or experience of safeguarding with children or young people, to complement the backgrounds of existing governors. Our small school supports students locally who have an Education and Health Care Plan.”

The governing board meets on a Tuesday at 5pm, once every half term. In addition, all governors are linked to an area of the school and they all agree to go in during the school day at least once a term.

Catherine said: “This gives you an opportunity to truly see the school in action and triangulate the information we are provided with at our governing board meetings.

“There is a comprehensive induction programme, as well as opportunities to undertake training to develop your knowledge and skills. We really would love to hear from you!

“If you are interested in supporting our amazing school and help make a difference for students and staff, why not arrange to come in and meet us for an informal chat over a coffee?”

Catherine said: “Cornfield School staff are inspirational and work tirelessly to change the lives of students who face challenges. They deserve the support of a strong team of governors to help the strategic leadership of the school.

"Please come and strengthen our committed team of governors so that we can be the best we can be as our school community deserves even stronger governance.

“Being a governor at Cornfield is so rewarding as it is a special place and the boys work hard to develop their talents and embrace a positive future.

“Come and add further expertise and energy to our governors and we will be delighted to receive your interest and application. Change lives with us by being a governor at Cornfield School.

“We have an inspirational headteacher in Stuart Simpson and the staff team are awesome. This is a very special place to be part of.”
