A second school in Worthing has been forced to send staff and pupils home after recording a positive coronavirus test.

Oak Grove College, a special needs school in The Boulevard, Worthing, has sent eight students and four members of staff home to isolate after a member of staff tested positive for Covid-19 yesterday (September 17).

Head teacher Phillip Potter said the group were sent home as soon as the test result was received yesterday morning and they would self-isolate for 14 days from the point of last contact - Friday, September 11.

The school wrote to parents yesterday afternoon advising them of the situation and reiterating Government guidelines on self-isolation and methods to stop the spread of the virus.

In a statement, the school said: "We can confirm one of the Oak Grove College community has tested positive for Covid-19. We have contacted Public Health England who have asked us to advise everyone within that person's class group to isolate.

"We do understand how frustrating this is for all families, staff and students but it's really important that we continue to put the health of all of our community first and follow the guidance given. I would like to thank everyone concerned for their understanding and patience.

"Our community of students, families and staff have been and continue to be so supporting and amazing in these times. Our thanks should also go to PHE for speedy, robust and timely advice and the multi-disciplinary teams who work with all of our students to ensure they continue to receive the best education, care and support.

"During these times Oak Grove College remains committed to providing education in the safest way possible and will continue to follow all relevant special school guidance."

Mr Potter said the staff member who had fallen ill was 'unwell', but expected to make a full recovery.

Oak Grove College becomes the second Worthing school in quick succession to report a positive test, after Vale School in Findon was forced to send staff and pupils home. Read more here: Worthing school isolates 26 pupils and four staff after positive coronavirus test
