The small independent care home Chalcraft Hall on the coast at Bognor Regis has made itself a ‘home from home’, where residents are greeted in a warm, friendly environment.

Its dedicated staff are cherished as much as its residents, which creates a happy atmosphere to live and work in.

Managers recognise the importance of keeping residents stimulated and having a garden centre situated behind the care home helps, as regular visits can be made to buy seeds and plants, or just drop in for a tea or coffee.

Garden centre on our doorstep

Director Sean Minks explains: “We are a small home and that allows our staff to develop very close relationships with those that we care for, it’s an intimate environment which allows for an extremely high level of person-centred care – this helps to develop a personal and warm relationship with our residents and their families.

“We know the importance of keeping residents stimulated and engaged, we are always finding the little details about people which we can and using those to help create best outcomes for those we care for. We have a few instances of individual’s being told they’d never walk again which we’ve managed to achieve through hard-work, attention and constant recovery practices.”

Activities co-ordinator Carol Hall arranges exercises twice a day and walks, as well as ‘Name that tune’, word searches and puzzles, arts and crafts among a range of other activities. Trips to the local church are arranged for those who want it.

Carol says: “Our gardening club is particularly popular, as residents can choose their own flowers and plants which we arrange through accompanied visits to the garden centre next door, then pot and grow them in our lovely garden through our gardening club.

“We go above and beyond to suit all likes and dislikes and some want to take part, while others may just want to sit and listen or watch.”

She adds: “There is a lovely family feeling here between both the staff and residents. The level of care and dedication is really high.”

For trips further afield, families have the seaside of Bognor Regis on the doorstep to take relatives out during family visits.

Apartment size rooms

Some of the 20 generously sized bedrooms are more like apartments, with separate bedroom and living areas, overlooking the garden.

Their big windows make them bright and airy, and they are tastefully decorated to a high standard. There are also two lounges, a dining room and patio areas.
