The register lists historic buildings and sites that are at risk of loss through neglect, decay or development, or are vulnerable to becoming so.
It aims to bring focus to places ‘in greatest need’ and Historic England is working with other organisations, and owners of the sites, to save them.
Most of the sites at risk in our local area can be seen pictured below, in addition to Hastings Town Centre, a Conservation Area in ‘poor’ condition, and a Romano-British iron working site in Beauport Park, Battle which, according to the register, has ‘extensive significant problems’ with its condition.

13. Statue of Queen Anne south east of Holmhurst St Mary's School, The Ridge, Baldslow - Condition: Very bad
Statue, 1711-12 in grounds of former convent (now sold separately). Longstanding lack of regular maintenance meant it was deteriorating rapidly through rainwater from overhanging trees and saline rain from the sea. It has also been recently subject to heritage crime but has now been made secure. An application for residential development which would secure the repair of the statue and improve its setting has now been granted by the Local Planning Authority. The developer has committed to carrying out repairs through a S106 Agreement. Photo: Hastings Borough Council

14. Christ Church, London Road, St Leonards on Sea, Hastings - Condition: Poor
Late Victorian church designed by Blomfield with later additions in prominent location. Suffering from severe erosion due to vulnerable stonework and proximity to coast. Also rainwater goods in need of overhauling, window ferramenta deteriorating and general deterioration of fabric. Repairs were carried out in 2021 to the tower and spire with funding from the Heritage Stimulus Fund. Photo: Google Street View

15. Martello Tower No. 30, Winchelsea Road, Rye - Condition: Poor
Martello tower built 1806. The moat and glacis on the east side lost. Unconnected with destruction of the moat and glacis, a small housing development was built adjacent to the east. The preservation of archaeological and historical significance will be the main consideration in assessing the suitability of proposals to convert Martello towers for residential use. 16. Remains of Manor House, Ore Place, Ore - Condition: Very bad
