Woolworths was a fixture for decades, first opening in Rowlands Road in August 1920 before moving to its enormous Montague Street store, remembered for its train set running round the ceiling. And for town centre groceries, we used to have Sainsbury’s in Chapel Road, back in the 1980s, and Somerfield in the Guildbourne Centre.
