The best places I eat (Part II)

The second instalment of the annual 'Best of Brighton and Hove' list.

The second instalment from the Places I Eat Brighton team and its annual 'Best of Brighton and Hove' list.

Best Restaurant

Little Fish Market, 10 Upper Market Street, Hove, BN3 1AS

Duncan Ray, the head chef, welcomes you to his intimate fish restaurant where every dish is crafted by his own fair hand. The attention to detail, impeccable presentation, and combination of flavours and textures is unbeatable. Combined with locally-sourced produce, an airy, relaxed atmosphere and wonderful customer service make this Hove restaurant one of a kind. It may be the kind of place you visit once a year - and usually on a special occasion - but Little Fish Market is worth every single penny.

Best Burrito

Dead Good Burrito

Solidifying themselves as Brighton's premier burrito street-food stand has done wonders for Dead Good Burrito. Serving an authentic Tex-Mex menu that includes smoking steak, chipolte chicken, carnitas pork, chicken mole and smokey black bean burritos, the Dead Good Burrito team's passion for affordable and filling food has gained them a large fan base and wild popularity.

Best Burger

Coggings and Co, 87-93 Dyke Road, Brighton, BN1 3JE

Open a little over eight months, Coggings and Co have wow'd the city with their no-frills, sit-down burger restaurant, located moments from Seven Dials. An award for sustainability soon followed after opening and their emphasis on excellent quality meaty patties with simple toppings have built up a loyal clientele. Another firm favourite across the Place I Eat Brighton team, it's exciting to watch a fully-fledged burger restaurant defy passing trends and make their mark on the city.

Best Roast

Sussex Yeoman, 7 Guildford Road, City Centre, Brighton BN1 3LU

At Places I Eat Brighton we are yet to find another roast that beats Sussex Yeoman. Using local produce and high-quality meat, the roast options are simply irresistible: Sussex leg of lamb, Sussex topside of beef, slow-roasted pork shoulder, and at least two vegetarian/pescitarian options ensure that all dietary requirements are catered for. Often fully booked in advance, the roasts are served in a deep plates surrounded by perfectly-cooked seasonal vegetables and a gravy to die for. The pudding are also fantastic. If you haven't tried one yet, you're missing you. Book in soon.

Best Newcomer

Curry Leaf Café, 60 Ship Street, Brighton, BN1 1AE

This award couldn't go to any other restaurant than Curry Leaf Café. Euan Sey, operational manager, and Kanthi Thamma, head chef, have stunned locals with their excellent and authentic southern Indian menu. You can leave your korma, jalfrezi, and vindaloo at the door and engulf your senses in the real Indian deal here. Dishes include (my personal favourite this year) kodagu pork curry and a fantastic South Indian baked sea bream. Open for brunch, lunch, and through until dinner, Curry Leaf Café also boasts an impressive craft beer selection. Already becoming a must-visit Brighton restaurant, it's exciting to watch Curry Leaf Café's positive impact on the city's food scene. Great work for an establishment only open eight months and long may the success continue.
