Chance to hear ancient instruments

The Ministry of Angels is performing at St John’s Church , in Pevensey Rd, St Leonards, on Friday, May 24, at 7.30pm.

With strange, ancient and ethereal instruments, Clara Sanabras (voice, oud, baroque guitar), Clare Salaman (hurdy gurdy, nykelharpa, hardanger fiddle), and Peter McCarthy (unusual bass instruments) will play traditional tunes, dances, songs and refined instrumental music, in celebration of angels.

At the turn of the twentieth century, a group of musicians calling themselves La Societe des Instrumens Anciens, gave a series of performances in Paris, in which they playeda mix of baroque music on what were then considered to be exotic instruments - including the hurdy gurdy and harpsichord.

Taking inspiration from these musicians, the Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments was formed in 2010 to explore with similarly unusual instruments, a repertoire that ranges from folk songs and dances to high art music from the 18th century.

The members of the society are all leaders in the field of early music, with many years of performing and recording experience.
