Gripping tale from G&S

MUSIC and Mayhem are set to explode onto the stage of Battle’s Memorial Hall this November as Battle Light Opera bring Gilbert and Sullivan’s mighty ‘The Yeomen of the Guard’ to life.

The impending execution of the dashing Colonel Fairfax, the attempts made for his release, and the ensuing comedy and heartbreak is a gripping tale, the rich music following every twist.

Musical director Kenneth Roberts arrives hotfoot from his post as leader of Opera South East to guide singers and a professional orchestra through the finest of Sullivan’s music.

The show will be directed by Lesley Moore.

The opera is set in the Tower of London during the 16th century and is the darkest, and perhaps most emotionally engaging, of the Savoy Operas.

‘Yeomen of the Guard’ is sure to keep the audience on its toes with a cornucopia of mediums, containing humorous puns and one-liners, topsy-turvy plot complications and engaging quasi-Shakespearean dialogue.

‘Yeomen of the Guard’ has been gracing the eyes and ears of theatre-goers since it first premiered at the Savoy Theatre on 3 October 1888.

It ran for 423 performances and critics considered the score to be Sullivan’s finest.
