Rain and sun, perfect combination for a fine Rustington show

WARM early summer weather and refreshing rain helped to produce a bumper crop of flowers, fruit and vegetables for Rustington Horticultural Association’s rose and sweet pea show on Saturday (June 28).

Although the entries didn’t quite match 2013’s record total, the Woodlands Centre witnessed another excellent show, with a steady stream of visitors.

Rose and sweet pea classes were well supported, with high quality blooms from exhibitors, and there was a wonderful selection of fruit and vegetables.

The photography classes were well contested and the John de Bohun room was filled with floral art and a photographic exhibition to browse.

Trophy winners: Tony Welch, RHS Sweet Pea Cup (most points), Glass Goblet (best horticulture exhibit), National Sweet Pea Society bronze medal (best vase), J. F. Passmore Cup (best pot plant); Jeffrey Haine, Dave Sanders Memorial Cup (best sweet peas), Glass Goblet (best photograph); Dave Napper, Rose Cup (most points); David Stubbings, Eric Norrell Rose Cup (best roses), Tom Lloyd Memorial Plate (best yellow rose); Wendy Gallienne, Glass Goblet (most floral art points), certificate (best floral art); Julie MacCulloch, Wally Barnes Cup (most points for flowers, vegetables and fruit); Malcolm Paradine, certificates for most vegetable points and best vegetable; David Donovan, certificate for most fruit points); Mac MacCulloch, best exhibit for growers of fewer than 50 sweet pea plants.
