Rankle returns with unique take on landscape painting

FOLLOWING the success of On the Edge of Wrong, the critically acclaimed exhibition by international art duo Rankle & Reynolds, St Leonards-based artist Alan Rankle returns to the blackShed gallery with a formidable solo show Wilderness Approaching.

The exhibition, which opens on Saturday (October 27), and runs until November 24, represents a significant coup for the Robertsbridge gallery and features paintings from the artist’s current series, launched in April in Copenhagen, and soon to be shown in London and Milan, along with a suite of specially commissioned small works on paper.

The title of the series, taken from a song by John Cale about a road trip where signs point out approaching wilderness as a roadside attraction, refers to the dichotomy and confusion in the way nature is represented and misrepresented in political and social culture.

These paintings continue Rankle’s interest in how historically evolving styles and methods of landscape painting relate to changing attitudes to the environment, and feature his characteristic fusion of richly glazed picturesque vistas interrupted and distorted by swathes of abstract colour.
