50mph LIMIT TO IMPROVE A27 SAFETY

THE Highways Agency is to make significant improvements to the A27 between Lewes and Polegate, MP Norman Baker has revealed.

The blueprint for improved safety, contained in a letter to the Lewes MP, includes the introduction of a temporary 50mph zone along the entire stretch between Polegate and Beddingham.

Improvements to signs and road markings around Selmeston and at the junction with Ripe Lane will commence in January.

Said Mr Baker: 'I am very pleased that my campaign for safety improvements to the A27 is proving successful and that we also now have a timetable for when much of the work will be carried out.

'We have already seen a welcome drop in accidents as a consequence of the modifications introduced to the Firle Straight and to the turn-off for Charleston.

'The measures now proposed, particularly the lower speed limit and modified junctions, will without doubt improve safety further.

'I am also pleased that the Highways Agency has agreed to look seriously at roadside signs, pointing out to drivers the existence of the parallel railway where a frequent and reliable train service now operates, and covers the Lewes to Polegate section in as little as 12 minutes - much speedier than by road.'
