65 FAIL BREATH TESTS

Results of this month's anti-drink and drug drive campaign on the roads of Sussex have so far been disappointing.

The campaign, being co-ordinated nationally by the Association of Chief Police Officers, has been in operation since December 1.

In the first 18 days, 65 drivers in Sussex were arrested having provided positive breath tests, and six more for being unfit through drugs.

Insp Phil Clarke, of Sussex Police Roads Policing Department said: "This clearly demonstrates that some people are still not taking the issue of drink/drug driving seriously.

"In the week leading up to Christmas it seems inevitable that some drivers will be prepared to risk causing death or serious injury, and potentially going to prison, for the sake of 'having a good time'.

"This is unacceptable and we make no apology for actively seeking to bring these irresponsible and selfish individuals to justice."

The Roads Policing Dept will be working with partner agencies mounting targeted road safety checks throughout Christmas and New Year as well as increasing patrols.

All drivers involved in a collision will be breath tested, whether or not alcohol is believed to be involved.
