A new route for Remembrance

FORMER servicemen and women will be marching on a different Remembrance Sunday route through Bognor Regis.

The parade will gather at Edward Bryant Primary School on London Road for the first time. The change has occurred after the closure of the Royal British Legion club on Clifton Road last year.

Mal Penberthy, the secretary of the Legion’s Bognor branch, said: “Even though there are just a few of us in the branch, we still wished to arrange the remembrance parade as this is one of those dates members of the public put in their diaries.

“It would be a shame if the march through Bognor with standards flying and, if possible, band playing, did not take place.

“The memorial service remembers those fallen heroes from the first and second world wars plus all the conflicts since, past and present.”

The parade will assemble at 10am this Sunday, ready to set off at 10.15am.

It will march along London Road, through the precinct, into High Street and York Road to turn left into Belmont Street. A brief stop will be made to enable those only able to march the final steps to the town hall to join.

The parade will march off at 10.40am along Belmont Street to form up at the war memorial outside the town hall for the annual service.

The parade is usually several hundred strong with a large contingent of cadets, Scouts, Guides and Brownies.

The service will start at 10.50am and include the laying of wreaths at the memorial.

The RAFA contingent will form up on the seafront afterwards to march to the pier to place a wreath in the sea in memory of airmen that were lost at sea.

A flypast by a Chinook helicopter from RAF Odiham will take place, weather permitting.

At 10am there will be a service at St Mary’s Church in Aldingbourne to remember those who have lost their lives in conflict. Wreaths will be laid at the Eastergate war memorial at the A29 and B2233 junction from 10.45am.

At 12.30pm, people will gather in the memorial garden in Yapton Road, Ford, to pay their respects.

Charges in Arun District Council-run car parks will be suspended between 9am-1pm on Remembrance Sunday so residents paying their respects and attending services can park for free.

Aldwick Parish Council’s remembrance service will be held at 10.45am next Monday in the Millennium Gardens off Pryors Lane in Rose Green.
