A walk down memory lane at Saxonwood

RESIDENTS of the Saxonwood Care Home celebrated Older People’s Day by reminiscing and sharing their memories of Battle in years gone by.

Residents recalled the traditional bonfires held on the Abbey Green and how the farming community met at Battle cattle market.

Residents remembered their children picking fruits for the jam factory and the distinct smell of the local tannery.

Saxonwood resident Eric Holliman, 97, said: “It was great listening to people’s experience of the town and my particular memory is of my nephew in law, Norman Heaney, who was town clerk of Battle in the 1960s and 70s.

“He welcomed the Queen to the town on the 900th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings. He was also a great campaigner for there not being any traffic lights, and to this day we still have none!”

The residents will share their memories with Battle and Langton School pupils.
